2017 REVIEW – A year in words!

2017 was an exciting year at Avonbourne Gym Club with lots of successes which all of our gymnasts should be proud of. The gymnasts continue to impress us every week, and we wanted to share with you some of the highlights of 2017.

26th February
Lucy Jordan competed in National Level 3 tumbling at the South West Tumbling Championships. She qualified in first place, getting through to the Region Team Finals which would be held in Birmingham in June.

17th and 18th March
The competition group competed at the South West Prelims in Yate over the weekend. 32 gymnasts competed and all the coaches were very proud of their achievements. The highlight of the weekend was when our Mens 4 qualified for the National NDP finals!

7th May
We decided to plan a friendly competition with a local club for our development group gymnasts. This was held at Littledown, and for many it was the first competition they had ever been to. Our gymnasts came away with lots of medals, and all enjoyed the experience. We hope to continue with this competition in the years to come.

13th and 14th May
This was a very exciting weekend for the club. Ethan Spittles, Jack Brooke, Corben Heward Mills, and George Sarafopolous competed at the NDP Acro Finals at Fenton Manor in Stoke on Trent. The boys performed their best routine and we were very proud of them!

11th June
The Dorset Acro and Tumbling Competition is always a highlight for the gymnasts and coaches, where the Development and Competition groups both compete and support each other. 24 tumblers, and 55 acro gymnasts competed, and we came away with countless medals. This was also a great opportunity for some of our coaches to practice their judging before going on to do judging qualifications later in the year.

17th June
Lucy Jordan represented the South West at the Regional Team NDP Tumbling Finals and came 9th. This meant that she was reserve for the National competition in July.

8th and 9th July
33 gymnasts from our competition group competed at the South West Championships in Yate. Lauren Finnigan, Georgia Read, and Lucy Jordan came home with a silver medal in Grade 5 Women’s Group. Ethan, George, Jack, and Corben also came away with a gold medal! We were very proud of all of our gymnasts, and it was a great end to the competition season for the whole team!

15th July
We were proud to take part in a gymnastics display organised to celebrate the life of Roger Castle, who was a massive part of making gymnastics in Dorset what it is today. We performed alongside other local clubs, and were praised for our routines. This was the first display some of our gymnasts had ever taken part in, and they all came together to perform a fantastic set of routines.

22nd July
The competition group then went on to perform at another display at Littledown Family Funday; an event we perform at annually. They performed their routines in the hall, and also out on the grass…luckily the weather held out!

4th and 5th November
This was a very very busy weekend for our competition group! They kicked it off performing at another event which we perform at annually; the Littledown Fireworks Display. Our displays were very well received and we had lots of compliments about our display. Our gymnasts love these events as a perfect excuse to show off their hard work without the pressure of a competition!
After their late night at the fireworks, 30 of the competition group got up early the following morning to travel to the City of Bristol competition. This was the first competition of the new season, and it was a great opportunity for new groups to try out new moves for the coming competitions. We also came away with lots of medals which is always a bonus!

Finally, on top of all that, it was a successful year for our coaching team. Sophie, Mia, Georgia, Megan, and Lauren began their coaching qualifications by passing their Level 1 Acro coaching exams.Fiona qualified as a Club Level judge. Wendy, Leanne, and Jess passed Level 3 Acro modules, and Leanne and Jess also passed their Level 2 Tumbling exam. We have also purchased lots of new equipment including a new coaching block, tumble track, and air track with an FIG landing mat. These allow us to continue to make our sessions the best they can be!

Thank you for all of your continued support throughout 2017, and we can’t wait to see what 2018 brings us!
